Biotechnology is the application technology to improve the genetic and biochemical characteristics of micro-organisms so that they can be used economically for human benefit. Biotechnology combines biological sciences disciplines like genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, cell biology, and bioinformatics with technical disciplines like chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and information technology. Biotechnology has been playing a vital role in the development of cutting edge technologies in the fields of medicine, agriculture, food processing, waste treatment, pollution control, bio-fuels and other forms of energy and bio-security.

The Bachelor of Engineering program in Biotechnology (BE-BT) provides students with in depth knowledge on core subjects like molecular biology, genetic engineering, cell biology, chemical engineering, immunology, bioprocessing, designing aspect of industrial scale bioreactors and bioprocessing, Agricultural Biotechnology, Marine Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. In addition, management courses, industry-oriented research projects provide a unique balance of skill sets that prepare students for a broad range of career opportunities. Theory instructions are supplemented with adequate practical and laboratory exercises so that students can understand the concepts better. Students also get exposed to computing languages like C++ and research projects in a chosen area of interest also forms an integral part of the curriculum.

Graduates in biotechnology are suitable for employment in the field of medicine, food technology, energy, industrial chemicals, biocatalysts and diagnostics. Graduates can also opt for post graduate and further doctoral studies to pursue a bright career in academics, research and development.
